Maxine Chernoff

You've gone to the city to relive
the 20th Century, fedoras beside
you, you in your simple shift and
pillbox hat. It's the prelapsarian
pink of 1963, only days before the
world broke and grief filled radio
waves. No one to mend this dream
by reversing its course. You walk
headlong into the sorrow. Like a
child with an abacus, you know
how to work the beads, but there
is no better outcome. The
uncertainty of the hour is a wish:
as present and future engulf the
story with endings.

Maxine Chernoff is the author of 17 poetry collections, most recently Under the Music: Collected Prose Poems. Former chair of Creative Writing at San Francisco State University, she is an NEA Fellow, a winner of the PEN Translation Award, and a former visiting writer at the American Academy in Rome.
