Americans are divided, they say, but the categories now appear to be comfortably numb, as the Pink Floyd song goes, or uncomfortably numb. Surely nothing else can explain why mass protests didn't erupt when the alarming article, written and reported by Charlie Savage, Maggie Haberman, and Jonathan Swan appeared in The New York Times yesterday.

In the too-carefully titled "Sweeping Raids, Giant Camps and Mass Deportations: Inside Trump’s 2025 Immigration Plans" the reporters revealed plans that include reassigning federal agents and deputizing local police officers and National Guard soldiers voluntarily contributed by Republican-run states to round up migrants. The plans also include utilizing a deportation method that does not require due process.

As anti-Zionist protesters at elite college campuses throw around the N word - Nazi - they might be better advised to look within their own country. How many of these college students will stay home on election day? How many will vote for Jill Stein or Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and risk re-electing Donald Trump?

Shudder.

Not that long ago, political operative Karl Rove was called our Nepo Baby president George W. Bush's "brain." Stephen Miller, the maladjusted Jewish boy from Santa Monica is Trump's brain on the hot-button issue of immigration.

Unfortunately, Miller does seem to actually have a functioning brain. By all accounts, he did an excellent job finding a multiplicity of administrative changes to alter the U.S. immigration system during the Trump presidency, weaponizing Trump's white supremacy leanings into a brutal, abusive treatment of migrants. Tradition and the law were merely objects to be twisted into sadistic abuse, whether or not the migrants had a legal case for asylum. Under Trump and Miller, the U.S. repeatedly violated the U.N. Declaration of Human Rights, separating families, and, in extreme cases, causing the deaths of adults and children, both in the borderlands as they attempted to cross and in private industry detention centers within the U.S..

If he is re-elected, Trump and his "brain" have a plan to go further. Let's say the quiet part out loud, as Trump himself does: A second Trump presidency would be terrifying reminiscent of Hitler's Germany.

This isn't just happening in the U.S. Neo-Nazism is on the rise in many countries, including Germany. As human migration rises, driven by the intertwined historical changes wrought by climate change and political instability, desperate migrants have become the scapegoat for national ills, just as Jews once were the scapegoats for Germany's economic woes after World War I.

Why student protesters aren't taking up the cause of human rights abuses within the borders of the U.S. either instead of or in addition to a conflict they know virtually nothing about, well, it's beyond us. Immigration is the invisible issue.

Former President Donald J. Trump is planning an extreme expansion of his first-term crackdown on immigration if he returns to power in 2025 — including preparing to round up undocumented people already in the United States on a vast scale and detain them in sprawling camps while they wait to be expelled.

The plans would sharply restrict both legal and illegal immigration in a multitude of ways.

Mr. Trump wants to revive his first-term border policies, including banning entry by people from certain Muslim-majority nations and reimposing a Covid 19-era policy of refusing asylum claims — though this time he would base that refusal on assertions that migrants carry other infectious diseases like tuberculosis.

He plans to scour the country for unauthorized immigrants and deport people by the millions per year.

To help speed mass deportations, Mr. Trump is preparing an enormous expansion of a form of removal that does not require due process hearings. To help Immigration and Customs Enforcement carry out sweeping raids, he plans to reassign other federal agents and deputize local police officers and National Guard soldiers voluntarily contributed by Republican-run states.

To ease the strain on ICE detention facilities, Mr. Trump wants to build huge camps to detain people while their cases are processed and they await deportation flights. And to get around any refusal by Congress to appropriate the necessary funds, Mr. Trump would redirect money in the military budget, as he did in his first term to spend more on a border wall than Congress had authorized.
